SMS vs. Microporous Coveralls: Buyer’s Guide
Choose a documented garment, not just a fabric label. This guide explains what to compare when reviewing SMS nonwoven coveralls and film-laminated or microporous garment descriptions.

Compare the material description
SMS refers to a spunbond–meltblown–spunbond nonwoven structure. Microporous coverall descriptions commonly refer to a film layer combined with a supporting material. These descriptions identify different fabric constructions; neither is a complete specification of garment protection. Ask the supplier to identify the exact model, fabric and documented performance rather than treating a broad material label as a guarantee.
Compare the complete garment
Alongside fabric, review hood and boot configuration, closure design, seams, cuffs and fit. Two garments using similar material descriptions can have different construction and supporting test data. Poltex’s current SMS product links specify 60 GSM fabric with an attached hood and boot covers. Its laminated chemical and biological suit inquiries are handled on separate pages.
Request evidence for the actual exposure
For a chemical requirement, ask about the named substance, concentration, exposure conditions and model-specific test data. For another regulated hazard, ask for the relevant documentation and instructions. A fabric weight, a color, a marketing label or a resemblance to another brand is not enough to establish suitability. Your site’s responsible PPE selector should assess the garment against the task.
Compare ordering details after technical selection
Once the required model is identified, compare its available sizes, case quantity, current price and delivery terms. Confirm whether the quote is per garment or per case. Use the size and case-pack guide to prepare your order, and contact Poltex for laminated-suit specifications or availability that is not shown in a live product selector.
Frequently asked questions
Is microporous always better than SMS?
A material name alone cannot answer that question. Compare the documented garment performance, fit and job requirements.
Does this guide claim equivalence to Tyvek?
No. Tyvek is a DuPont brand and material, while the linked Poltex products are described as SMS. Compare the actual model documentation rather than assuming equivalence.
